FOCUS Orange County Serves Homeless Children Living in Motels

When one thinks of Orange County, California, one doesn’t normally think of poverty since it is one of the wealthiest areas in the nation. However, there are over 20,000 children who are homeless in the county. Many of these children live in motels. In some cases there are more than six children living in one hotel room. They often do not know where their next meal will come from. FOCUS is working to unite the local orthodox Churches to serve these kids and help provide them the necessities they need.

Is Your Will, Your Will?

Studies over the last several years find that the majority of Americans, somewhere around 60%, do not have wills. However, 100% of all Americans have estate planning!  That is, if you do not have a will or trust, the state will divide up and distribute your possessions for you. The state, of course, will have a claim in it. Read More

Say YES to Being Uncomfortable
It is quite common to feel uncomfortable in new situations with new people.  In these moments of discomfort, it is important to discern whether or not you are feeling the good kind of uncomfortable or the bad kind.  The "bad kind" is usually determined by some kind of unhealthy or dangerous situation. In this case, it is probably the best decision to either help calm the situation if you are able, or to leave it.  The "good kind" of discomfort is actually far from being unhealthy or dangerous.  If embraced, this healthy discomfort can be life-changing for you and others. Read More

FOCUS Blogger Update

Dear {contact.first_name} {contact.last_name},

February has been an exciting month for FOCUS North America. We launched our Tackle Poverty with the Polamalu Family campaign. Our YES program has touched many lives and has inspired many youths to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ on trips to Los Angeles and Cleveland. Our Board of Director, Charles Ajalat, was able to present at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Anaheim, CA and at the Sunday of Orthodox gathering at the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in Los Angeles. And Bryan Dahms, National Director of Ministries, and I have had several productive trips to Appalachia, St. Louis, and Twin Cities to explore the formation of FOCUS Centers.

As you can see, FOCUS North America’s programs are growing by leaps and bounds. This Lent, please consider giving a donation to FOCUS North America. May the Lord bless you.

In Christ,

Contrary to Recent Reports, Homelessness in the U.S. is Increasing

Recently, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) released its annual report to Congress in which it stated the homelessness decreased slightly from January 2007 to January 2008.

However, these statistics mainly account for the decrease in individual homelessness. HUD has a limited definition of homelessness for families. It does not account for the increase of families doubling up in residences.  HUD's report is also limited in the fact it does not include enough data from the recent economic crisis that more than likely has created even more homeless individuals and families.

FOCUS North America is working to raise awareness about the situation of homelessness and many issues related to poverty in North America and is offering solutions and aid to reach out to those around us in need.

Homelessness stems from a lack of affordable housing. Increasing rents, destruction of traditional low-income housing and cuts in federal housing programs threaten affordable housing with extinction.

According to the NLCHP, the foreclosure and economic crisis are significantly increasing homelessness and the number of families at risk of homelessness in cities and counties across the nation:

· The Executive Director of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness has said that he is receiving preliminary data from cities and organizations showing homelessness increases of as much as 20%.

· Reuters has reported that local and state homeless groups have seen a 61% rise in homelessness since the foreclosure crisis began in 2007.

· On March 27, 2008, CBS News reported that 38% of foreclosures involved rental properties, affecting at least 168,000 households.

· The Sarasota, Florida, Herald Tribune has said that, by some estimates, more than 311,000 tenants nationwide have been evicted from homes this year after lenders took over the properties.

· The Boston Herald has reported that eviction filings in Massachusetts rose by 15% in the past quarter alone.

FOCUS North America was formed specifically to work on behalf of the entire Orthodox Church to provide aid domestically, especially in the areas of Food, Occupation, Clothing, Understanding and Shelter.  With your support FOCUS North America and its partner ministries, like the Philoxenia House, Reconciliation Services, Trinity Youth Services and St. Brigid Fellowship, offer life-changing care for the homeless and hurting in dire life transitions, especially those with children.  Together we can make a difference in the lives of the poor here at home.

Dear {contact.first_name},

August is a very busy month for FOCUS North America and our partner ministries!  While many of us go on vacation before the end of the summer, those we serve are still in need during this hot summer month.  Homelessness, joblessness and hopelessness know no summer vacation.  I wrote a short article on the rise of homelessness in the US below that I hope you will take a minute to read today.
Your gifts and support of FOCUS North America during this hot summer month help us to meet the critical needs of those we serve through our programs and partners. Thank you for caring!
FOCUS North America is excited to announce its new program, Orthodox Youth Outreach (OYO), and to welcome to our committed staff Ms. Katrina Bitar as FOCUS North America's OYO Program Director.  OYO is a program designed to equip and engage our junior high and high school age kids in serving those most in need in our communities and learning to be leaders - see the press release link below!

God bless you for helping us feed and care for the hungry, homeless, and needy men, women, and children during one of the toughest times of the year!
