FOCUS Appalachia is an outreach program in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Volunteers participate in one-week service trips, providing much-needed home repairs for elderly and low-income families. Projects can include installing home siding, remodeling bathrooms, building handicap-accessible ramps, painting home exteriors and interiors, replacing roofing, and doing yard work.
No special experience or skills are required to participate, just a willing heart and a positive attitude!
When can we go?
Trips are scheduled between May and October. Trips are scheduled “on demand”; call FOCUS to arrange a convenient week for you or your group.
Trips are one-week long. Participants are expected to arrive in Spruce Pines, NC on a Sunday and depart the following Saturday.
Who can participate?
Anyone can participate! Church groups find FOCUS Appalachia to be a wonderful service opportunity and a great way to build fellowship.
Individuals can also participate in a service trip and will be matched with a group.
Teens and children can participate if accompanied by adults, but please realize that younger participants will be limited in the work they can do.
What does it cost?
The cost is $300 per person, which covers food and lodging for 6 nights/7 days and all building supplies. Participants are responsible for their own travel to and from Spruce Pine, NC, and for transportation during the week. For that reason, groups generally choose to drive to North Carolina.
Where do we stay?
Teams stay in a large dormitory-style guest house. The house is furnished with bunk beds; men and women sleep in separate quarters. The facilities have bathrooms, showers with hot water, and a kitchen. Teams go grocery shopping at the start of the week and share responsibility for cooking throughout the week. The cost of groceries is covered by the registration fee.
What is the work schedule?
The work week is Monday through Friday. Teams leave the guest house at 7:45 am and work from 8-4 with an hour break for lunch.
What is an average team size?
Team sizes are typically between 10 and 35 people but smaller and larger groups can be accommodated.
Join us in 2013 for a fulfilling and rewarding trip!
