Contrary to Recent Reports, Homelessness in the U.S. is Increasing Recently, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) released its annual report to Congress in which it stated the homelessness decreased slightly from January 2007 to January 2008. However, these statistics mainly account for the decrease in individual homelessness. HUD has a limited definition of homelessness for families. It does not account for the increase of families doubling up in residences. HUD's report is also limited in the fact it does not include enough data from the recent economic crisis that more than likely has created even more homeless individuals and families. FOCUS North America is working to raise awareness about the situation of homelessness and many issues related to poverty in North America and is offering solutions and aid to reach out to those around us in need. Homelessness stems from a lack of affordable housing. Increasing rents, destruction of traditional low-income housing and cuts in federal housing programs threaten affordable housing with extinction. According to the NLCHP, the foreclosure and economic crisis are significantly increasing homelessness and the number of families at risk of homelessness in cities and counties across the nation: · The Executive Director of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness has said that he is receiving preliminary data from cities and organizations showing homelessness increases of as much as 20%. · Reuters has reported that local and state homeless groups have seen a 61% rise in homelessness since the foreclosure crisis began in 2007. · On March 27, 2008, CBS News reported that 38% of foreclosures involved rental properties, affecting at least 168,000 households. · The Sarasota, Florida, Herald Tribune has said that, by some estimates, more than 311,000 tenants nationwide have been evicted from homes this year after lenders took over the properties. · The Boston Herald has reported that eviction filings in Massachusetts rose by 15% in the past quarter alone. FOCUS North America was formed specifically to work on behalf of the entire Orthodox Church to provide aid domestically, especially in the areas of Food, Occupation, Clothing, Understanding and Shelter. With your support FOCUS North America and its partner ministries, like the Philoxenia House, Reconciliation Services, Trinity Youth Services and St. Brigid Fellowship, offer life-changing care for the homeless and hurting in dire life transitions, especially those with children. Together we can make a difference in the lives of the poor here at home.
